Decorating children’s rooms: ideas and details that make the difference

Decorating children’s rooms is quite a challenge for many mothers, which is why below we give you a few tips to help you do it in the best possible way.

Let’s start with the basics

Before the furniture, we should start with the basics, which in this case are the walls, and if necessary also the floor. It would be great if the floor were as cosy as possible: a carpet, wooden flooring or a good rug to insulate against the cold. And for the walls, we have several options:

• Painting them: Painting the walls is the most traditional way of decorating them, and very effective when it comes to making a change. We advise you to choose neutral colours, which will make combinations with textiles or other decorative elements possible.
• Using wallpaper: Wallpapering the walls is once again at the cutting edge of home decor fashion. In the case of children’s rooms, there are countless designs and styles. Choose the one you like best, always thinking about the whole so it doesn’t end up overdone. A good option would be to put wallpaper on the main wall and paint the rest in the same range of tones.
• Adding decorative vinyl: Another alternative to wallpaper would be decorative vinyls. First we would paint the room and then place the vinyl, either covering a whole wall or as small details. There are also countless models available.

Moving on to colour

As we have already mentioned, for children’s rooms the ideal is to choose neutral colours and, if possible, light ones, not only for the walls but also for the rest of the decor. These tones bring brightness, serenity and elegance, as well as being highly versatile decoratively.

Pastel tones are a safe bet: greys, beiges, yellows, orange or green shades. There is also a wide range of tones to get right, without having to resort to conventions such as pink for girls or blue for boys.

Lastly, when it comes to colour, we can create contrasts by adding darker elements, but without overloading the space.

Choosing the best layout

If space allows, it would be good to divide it into several zones: a rest area, a play area and a learning area. We would place the rest area in the part with the least natural light, and the learning area on the opposite side, where there is the most natural light. The play area could be either the central part or one of the corners left free.

Order is an important factor to take into account: having a storage space where toys and other objects can be kept is key. Teaching children to be tidy from a young age will help them develop this quality in adulthood.

Choosing the furniture

Children’s furniture also plays an important role in room decor. You can choose a complete matching set, or you can combine pieces that go well together. In any case, apart from the cot or the bed, there is one element that should never be missing from a children’s room: a bookshelf. The bookshelf is a perfect element for placing their storybooks, soft toys, ornaments…

On the other hand, we must take several factors into account when choosing the furniture: it should be safe, durable, functional and, if possible, grow with the child and adapt to their needs.
