Mindfulness: Why incorporate it into the little ones' routine?

For adults and children alike with anxiety or sadder thoughts, mindfulness can be a very useful tool.

In recent years, the wellbeing landscape has changed for families. After the pandemic, rising stress levels and the greater attention we pay to our own health and happiness have made mindfulness practices a priority in our daily lives. Mental health is finally being taken into account! According to a study carried out by Unicef in 2021, Spain is the European country with the highest number of children and teenagers with mental health problems: 20,8 % of Spaniards aged between 10 and 19 suffer from some kind of disorder.

Becoming aware of the present moment allows us to get to know the real world and our place in it better. What we think is not always real, but sometimes it affects us as if it were. Mindfulness frees their minds from fear and worries. Mindfulness practices benefit not only people under external stressors, but also those with diagnosed behavioural disorders, such as ADHD, and those experiencing mood swings, sleep problems or trouble concentrating.

The key feature — and the reason why many people start incorporating mindfulness into their daily routine — is that it gives the person better and greater emotional management. That is, it helps to identify the emotion, accept it, cradle it and learn to manage it properly. In this way, over time the person becomes the master of their emotions, and the opposite — sadly so common — does not happen: that emotions end up overwhelming the child.

Although finding out what works for each child must be approached individually, the most common mindfulness practices include keeping a journal, sound baths, meditation and movement. Manifestation (that is, turning something into reality through the power of attraction and conviction) is one of the most popular techniques. Self-development author and coach Roxie Nafousi has turned it into the core of her work. Her most recent book, Manifest For Kids, published a few months ago, aims to provide children with the tools they need to better understand their own feelings and boost their self-esteem.

Learning to manifest is like gaining a new “superpower”, and with it they will be able to understand and work through their emotions, instead of letting them overwhelm or define them. It will help them see the world through a more positive lens, which will ultimately change their perception (and therefore their experience) of the world. It is a way of becoming aware and working both on themselves and on what they want to achieve.
